The History of
RYC
The Rendezvous Yacht Club is
located in Fort Frances, Ontario on beautiful Rainy
Lake. Fort Frances is
centrally located 420 kilometers east of Winnipeg, Manitoba, 340 kilometers west
of Thunder Bay, Ontario, and 300 miles north of Minneapolis / St. Paul,
Minnesota.
The RYC was founded in 1978 with the mission statement: "the primary object of this club is to promote sailing, good seamanship, safety and good sportsmanship among sailors on Rainy Lake…"
In 1993 the American Rainy Lake Yacht Club and the Canadian Rendezvous Yacht Club merged to form the Rendezvous Yacht Club of today. We now have members from the United States and Canada, making ours a truly unique, international yacht club.
Rainy Lake is an L-shaped lake, forty-five miles long along its its north - south direction and thirty-five miles long along its east - west direction. Because Rainy Lake has over fifteen hundred miles of shoreline and thirteen hundred islands, it is a true sailing paradise. It's many secluded coves and heavily wooded islands provide a wonderful backdrop for the perfect cruise.
The Rendezvous Yacht Club is a licensed, non-profit organization in Ontario and is a member of the Canadian Yachting Association. We hold monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of the month. In the summer, we gather at La Place Rendezvous Hotel following the Wednesday Night Races. During the winter months, meeting locations vary; please contact an officer if you would like to join us. The club has four elected officers and various other committees put together to fulfill club goals.
RYC activities include weekly Wednesday night races (May - Sept) complete with post-race relaxation at the Sand Bar in the La Place Rendezvous Hotel. Our Saturday race series runs from June through September. Our major race event of the year is the Kettle Falls Regatta, a twenty-five mile race from Island View to the mouth of the Kettle River at Kettle Falls. The entire fleet usually overnights on the docks at Kettle Falls for a night of fun.
Another highlight of the year is the annual Commodore's Ball at the end of October. This event marks the end of the sailing season. Trophies, the year's race summary, and special awards are presented by the Commodore to members of the club. It is a spectacular night of great food and fun, capped off by a year end slide show containing pictures from the entire season of sailing.
